What is OnlyFans? A subscription platform, explained without the assumptions.

OnlyFans is a website where creators publish content behind a paywall and fans pay a monthly subscription, plus tips and paid messages, to see it. That is the whole mechanism. Everything else people ask, what it is for, who is on it, who owns it, whether it is an app, how the money moves, is answered below from the platform's own terms and the company's public filings, not from headlines.

Short answer

A subscription platform where creators post behind a paywall and fans pay to see it. The platform keeps 20 percent of every payment.

Most pages carry adult content, which is why the name is known, but the platform itself is a content and payments service: accounts, a feed, direct messages, subscriptions, tips and paid messages, run by a company registered in the United Kingdom.

  • Who pays whomFans pay the platform, the platform pays creators

People type "what is OnlyFans" for very different reasons: a parent who saw the name, a creator on another platform weighing a move, a fan about to subscribe, a journalist. This page is written for all of them at once, which means it explains the mechanism first and the reputation second, and separates what the platform's own terms say from what people assume.

What OnlyFans is.

OnlyFans is a content subscription platform. A creator opens an account, sets a monthly subscription price or makes the page free to follow, and publishes photos, videos, text and live streams to a feed that only subscribers can see. Fans pay the subscription, and can pay more for locked posts, paid direct messages and tips. The platform handles every payment, keeps a fee, and pays creators the rest.

Two features make it different from a social network. There is no public feed and little discovery: its terms say it may recommend creator accounts on a user's home page, but most pages are found from outside, through the creator's promotion on other platforms. And the direct messages are part of the product, not an afterthought: paid messages and tips sent in the DMs are where much of a page's income is made.

What OnlyFans is for.

The platform is used for any content a creator can put behind a paywall: fitness coaching, cooking, music, comedy, art, tutorials, and adult content. Adult content is the largest category and the reason the name is widely known, and the platform allows it within an acceptable use policy that bans specific categories outright. The terms of service do not describe OnlyFans as an adult site; they describe a service for creators to monetize content, with adult content permitted under rules.

For a creator, what OnlyFans is for is simple: it turns an audience built elsewhere into subscription and message revenue, with the platform taking care of payments, age verification and payouts. For a fan, it is a way to pay a specific person for content and access, with the payment handled by the platform rather than by the creator. The guide on how to start an OnlyFans explains the creator side step by step; the subscriber section covers the paying side.

Who is on it.

Two kinds of account exist. Fan accounts are free to open, require the holder to be at least 18, and can subscribe, tip and message. Creator accounts are fan accounts that have applied to publish, passed identity verification with a government ID, and provided tax and payout details. Anyone who appears in a creator's content must also be a verified adult, either as a tagged creator or with proof of identity and written consent on file; the terms call this co-authored content and enforce it.

How many people are on the platform is a number the company publishes in its annual filings in the United Kingdom, and the figures move every year. This page does not quote them, because a number copied once and never updated becomes wrong within months; the company's filings are the source, named below.

How the money moves.

PaymentWho paysWhat it buysPlatform fee
SubscriptionThe fan, monthly, renewing unless turned offAccess to the creator's feed for the period20 percent
Paid messageThe fan, per messageA locked photo or video sent in the DMs or posted to the feed20 percent
TipThe fan, any amount within the platform's limitsNothing by default; often used to buy an item from the creator's tip menu20 percent
CustomThe fan, by tip or paid messageContent made to request20 percent

The platform is the merchant. According to the terms of service, fan payments are received and processed by a payment provider the platform approves, the fee of 20 percent is deducted from each payment, and the balance becomes creator earnings available for withdrawal. The creator never handles the fan's card, which is why a fan's payment details are never visible on the creator's side, and why a bank statement names the platform rather than the creator. The page on how much OnlyFans takes covers the fee and payouts in detail.

What a page contains.

  • A profile: header image, avatar, display name, username, bio, subscription price or "free", and links the creator chooses to show.
  • A feed: posts visible to subscribers, some of them locked behind an additional price. Non subscribers see the profile and, on some pages, a preview.
  • Direct messages: where creators and fans talk, where paid messages and tips are sent, and where many pages earn most of their income.
  • A tip menu, on most earning pages: a price list of extras, pinned to the feed. It is a creator convention rather than a platform feature; the tip menu guide explains it.
  • Live streams, polls, stories and scheduled posts: platform features creators use to keep a feed active between shoots.

A creator also has a dashboard fans never see: statistics, payouts, tracking links that record which outside channel sent each subscriber, and the settings that decide what the profile shows. Fans have their own settings, notably for privacy, which the subscriber section covers question by question, starting with what a creator can see about a fan.

Who runs it.

The platform is operated by Fenix International Limited, a company registered in England, which is the contracting party named in the terms of service and the entity that publishes annual accounts with the UK companies register. The site launched in 2016. Ownership and management have changed since, and the current position is on the founding and ownership page, which is sourced from the register rather than from news reports.

What OnlyFans is not.

  • NotAn app in the Apple or Google stores. Both stores refuse adult content, so the platform runs in a browser and can be saved to a phone's home screen. See does OnlyFans have an app.
  • NotFree. Fan accounts cost nothing to open, but "free OnlyFans" searches lead to leaked content and scams, which the terms prohibit and which this site does not link to.
  • NotAnonymous. Pseudonymous to the creator, yes: a creator sees a username, not a name or a card. To the platform and the bank, no. See paying anonymously.
  • NotA place where pages get discovered. There is no feed of new creators. Every subscriber arrives from promotion elsewhere, which is the work the promotion service exists for.
  • NotUnregulated. The platform verifies age and identity for creators, requires consent for everyone in content, and removes accounts that break the acceptable use policy.

How it differs from social media.

OnlyFans is often described as a social media platform, and it borrows the parts: a profile, a feed, likes, comments and direct messages. The business underneath is different. On an ad funded social network, users post for free, the platform sells their attention to advertisers, and a creator earns only through brand deals or a revenue program. On OnlyFans the fan pays, the creator sets the price, and the platform takes a fee from each payment. That one change explains most of what people find unusual about the site.

How a page is foundMostly through links the creator posts elsewhere; limited recommendations insideThrough recommendation feeds and search inside the app

The practical result is that creators use the two together. They build an audience on social media, where people already spend their time online, and send the part of it willing to pay to OnlyFans. That is why the promotion side of the business lives outside the platform, and why a creator with no audience elsewhere starts with nobody to sell to. The guide to how to promote OnlyFans covers how that audience is built, platform by platform.

How someone becomes a creator.

Every creator account starts as a fan account. The terms list what registration takes, and the platform then asks more of anyone who wants to be paid. The steps below are the order the platform works in; each has its own guide on this site with the detail.

  1. 1

    Open an account

An email address, a username and a password, or sign in through an approved third party. The terms require every user to be at least 18 years old. The full sequence is in OnlyFans sign up.

  2. 2

    Verify identity

A creator passes identity verification with a government ID before publishing for pay. What is checked and why it fails is in OnlyFans verification.

  3. 3

    Add payout and tax details

Payout details decide where earnings are withdrawn to. The terms add tax duties, such as following the UK VAT Policy for a creator registered for UK VAT.

  4. 4

Set a price or make the page free

The creator chooses a monthly subscription price or a free page, and can sell locked posts and paid messages on either. The trade offs are in OnlyFans subscription price.

  5. 5

    Create and post

Photos, videos, audio, live streams and text all count as content under the terms. How posting, locking and scheduling work is in how to post on OnlyFans.

  6. 6

    Bring fans from outside

Without a discovery feed, the page grows only from promotion elsewhere. This is the step that decides income.

None of these steps requires adult content, and none of them sets an earning level. What a page earns depends on the audience the creator brings and what they sell inside; the range is wide and the honest version is in how to make money on OnlyFans.

Sex work, sexual content and the 2021 reversal.

The reason most people know the name is sexual content. Wikipedia describes the service as an internet content paid subscription service based in London, widely known for its popularity with pornographers but also hosting other creators, including athletes, musicians and comedians. For creators who sell explicit material, OnlyFans is a form of online sex work done at a distance: no client meets the creator, the platform handles payment and age checks, and the creator decides what to post and what to sell.

The platform once moved to end that. According to Wikipedia, on August 19, 2021 the company announced that from October 1, 2021 it would not allow sexually explicit content, and six days later it said it would reverse the decision and that adult content would be allowed on the site indefinitely. Wikipedia also records that OnlyFans grew in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic. The episode is one reason a creator may weigh a second platform, a choice compared in Fansly vs OnlyFans.

  • Allowed, within rules. Adult content is permitted under the acceptable use policy, which bans specific categories outright.
  • Everyone in it is a verified adult. Anyone who appears in content must be a verified creator or an adult whose proof of identity and written, informed consent the creator holds.
  • The creator keeps ownership. Under the terms, creators warrant that they own their content or hold the rights to it, and grant OnlyFans a license to use it to operate the service.
  • Nothing here is for minors. Fans and creators must both be at least 18, and the site is not built for anyone younger.
